Saughton Junction

Friday, 29th May, 2009 | 12:04
Location: Edinburgh

At Saughton Junction in the western outskirts of Edinburgh, a ScotRail class 170 3-car DMU passes beneath the photographer heading towards Edinburgh on the Fife lines, whilst No. 170 458 heads west from the city along the E&G lines on 29th May, 2009. This view will shortly be radically transformed by the electrification of the soon-to-be-reopened route from Edinburgh to Glasgow via Bathgate and Airdrie, some of the catenary-masts for which can be seen in the photo, while on each side of the line foundations can be seen in the course of construction for a bridge which will carry Edinburgh's new tramway across the railway at a point directly above the westbound train.
