The Alternative at The Station, Gateshead

Blood Robots, Reality Control, Psycho Faction and The Alternative at The Station, Gateshead, 9th July, 1983. I was now thoroughly disillusioned with punk. I felt (perhaps incorrectly, in hindsight) that a bunch of glue-sniffing spiky-tops were never going to change the world or have any impact on the minds of the masses, and I felt that punk - ever faster, noisier and more derivative - had disappeared up its own talentless, unmusical arsehole. Worse, I'd thought that anarchy was supposed to be about following your own principles and deciding your own life, but certain anarcho-pacifist zealots seemed to have turned it into some kind of puritanical religion, and woe betide anyone who should dare to wear leather boots or put milk in their tea. Thus, one of the most exciting and intense periods in my life drew to a close. This was a good day, though: a bunch of us Dunfermline punks walked across the River Tyne and had a merry old time in one of Newcastle's pubs, and the beautiful Hazel Peattie sat next to me on the bus home.
