The Alternative at Rose Street Hall, Inverness

The Alternative, The Strike, The Dissidents, Mutual Fear and As The Crow Flies at Rose Street Hall, Inverness. This was an utterly shit gig in every conceivable way. Folk shagging in the pishy, stinking bogs. Loads of glued-up punks and Nazi skinhead morons spitting at the bands, jumping on stage and looking for aggro. A very threatening atmosphere. The Dissidents didn't conform to the stereotype punk image of the time and the audience hated us, and I didn't have a clue how to deal with them. Craig Nichol of The Alternative did: he truly came into his own as a frontman at this gig, dominating the stage and staring the audience in the eye, and he was criticised by the anarchist-pacifist-zealot faction amongst The Alternative's followers for being too aggressive. Garbage! The gig was bad enough, but the journey home was probably one of the most unpleasant experiences of my life, and almost definitely the coldest. 4 hours and 150 miles across the Grampian Mountains on a freezing mid-winter's night, in a bus with no heating and no toilet! When one of our fellow passengers urgently needed a pish, the only solution was for him to whap it out and do it in a poly bag, which was duly tied up and placed on the floor of the bus. After a few minutes someone picked up the bag and it was found to have frozen into a solid block of ice! This story has been told so many times over the years that I was no longer sure if it was actually true, but it has now been independently confirmed. There certainly was ice inside the windows of the bus.
